  • Entangled photons created from quantum dots

    18 Nov 2009 | 2:00 pm
To exploit the quantum world to the fullest, a key commodity is entanglement -- the spooky, distance-defying link that can form between objects such as atoms even when they are completely shielded from one another. Now, physicists have developed a promising new source of entangled photons using quantum dots tweaked with a laser.
  • Exotic electric properties of graphene confirmed

    18 Nov 2009 | 8:00 am
First, it was the soccer-ball-shaped molecules dubbed buckyballs. Then it was the cylindrically shaped nanotubes. Now, the hottest new material in physics and nanotechnology is graphene: a remarkably flat molecule made of carbon atoms arranged in hexagonal rings much like molecular chicken wire.

  • What Size Service Do I Have?

    16 Nov 2009 | 5:57 am
If you've ever wondered what size your electrical service is but just don't no where to begin to look, then you've stumbled on the right article. Maybe your home is an older one that still has a 60-amp fuse panel feeding it. If so, it is time to do like Tim "The Tool Man" says and update it to "More Power"!Circuit breaker panels are the choice of people these days and you'll need at least a 100-amp service if not a 200-amp service to provide enough power for your home. Locating the information needed to determine how much power your service can draw now is easy enough if you know what to look…

Your home has many electric small appliances in it that you use every day. You use them to cook, clean and even iron your clothes, sometimes on a daily basis. Although they may be plugged into almost any outlet in your home, the National Electrical Code requires you to have certain specialized circuitry to run these small appliances. The reason is very clear, electrical load. You see, things like irons and toaster ovens draw a large amount of elelctrical current and require their own circuits. By implementing basic electrical codes for safety, these appliances will work properly without…
  • Choosing Electrical Wire Based On Gauge, Amperage, and Wattage Load

    11 Nov 2009 | 10:04 pm
We've all done it. Walk into a building supply store and head for the electrical department to buy some electrical wire for a project we have at home. Maybe it's just to extend a circuit for an additional outlet or two, or maybe it's an underground feed to a swimming pool you just added? In any case, the point is that now you're at the store looking at the wire, which one is the right wire for you? What size wire do I need? Is color important? To help you understand the correct choice, manufacturers have labeled the outer coating of the wire with types and gauges of wire. You see, the…

  • Macronix takes NOR flash lead. But who will follow?

    29 Oct 2009 | 10:46 am
Today's announcement by Macronix of a 256-Mbit serial NOR flash chip is interesting from a capabilities point of view, but leaves a number questions regarding market pull, interface standards and overall market size that makes me wonder who will follow Macronix to create a storm in this teacup? Or, will the connectivity of every embedded device change the landscape completely and push the odds more in Macronix's favor? From Macronix's point of view, the 256-Mbit introduction is an effort to secure the lion's share of what it expects will be a $2 billion market by 2014, up from $645 million…

  • Life cycle costs for extra high voltage cables and overhead lines

    HDK
    20 Nov 2009 | 10:49 am
Underground cables (UGCs) are – at installation – more expensive than overhead lines (OHLs), although it is very difficult to draw general cost ratios, due to the specificity of every project. In most cases comparisons are made solely on the capital costs of the equipment together with the costs of installation and accommodation works. In other cases, respective life costs are considered that take into account transmission losses, maintenance costs, availability (and associated outage related costs) and decommissioning. read more
  • Environment impacts of extra high voltage cables and overhead lines

    HDK
    20 Nov 2009 | 10:35 am
For economic reasons, extra high voltage (“EHV”) underground cables (“UGCs”) are rarely appropriate for an entire new AC power transmission project (although in some long distance circumstances a DC cable may be a solution). UGCs are though especially effective at helping power transmission projects to cross areas where there are environmental sensitivities. These include areas that are: read more

    comparesavvy
    20 Nov 2009 | 2:32 pm
What is economy 7 in electricity prices? Economy 7 electricity is a fancy term for night time (red. cheaper) electricity. This cheaper electricity stems from so called “must run” electricity production at night. The hours at which this cheaper electricity is delivered varies from company to company but is usually from around midnight until 08.00 am. (Some companies use slightly different starting and ending times) The reason why electricity suppliers can charge lower prices for this night time electricity is a simple matter of supply and demand. For obvious reasons, the demand for…
