  • Television energy efficiency being offset in homes

    27 Jan 2012 | 11:31 am
For decades, televisions were ridiculed by environmentalists for their energy drain. However, in the last decade, technological advances have reduced the energy consumption in flat screen televisions by as much as 60 percent. One of the key drivers in this reduction is the use of light emitting diode (LED) bulbs to “backlight” the television. The technology, which was introduced by Sony in 2004, became available on a mass scale in 2009 and has accounted for much of the increase in energy efficiency. read more

Major upgrading of the German electricity transmission system to incorporate technologies such as flexible line management or high temperature-resistant aluminium conductors would not be cost effective, according to a report from the German Energy Agency, DENA GmbH. The study looks at the transmission requirements of a German grid that guarantees security of supply, while operating in a liberalized European energy market, when 39% of power is supplied from renewable energy sources. (Germany plans to generate 39% from renewable sources in 2020.) read more

Development of wind power has been important in recent years and this trend is expected to continue. More and more, this source of energy represents a significant share in the energy balances of several European countries. But variability of wind power remains a major challenge of this technology. For example, a wind turbine can start producing in the middle of the night when electricity demand is very low. Statistically, we can also observe that production of wind turbines is slightly higher at night than during the day. read more

  • Books about Nuclear Energy – 2012 List

    dyurman
    15 Jan 2012 | 8:16 pm
This blog post is an update of the list posted in October 2010 I have revised the resources tab on top at my blog and have created a new list titled ” Books about Nukes”  The link will open a new window.  The list will be updated over time. The date of this edition of the list is: January 15, 2012.  Nuclear energy is the stuff stars are made of This list is intended to reach the NON-TECHNICAL reader.  This means the book must explain nuclear energy for commercial use, and closely related issues, e.g., uranium mining, spent fuel management, etc., in a clear…
  • Radiation from Fossil Fuels:

    gmarcus
    11 Jan 2012 | 4:10 pm
The Forgotten Problem Given the widespread concern about the risk of radiation exposure from nuclear power plants–which those of us in the field know is very low–I have always been amused (if that is the right word) by the fact that routine emissions from coal plants expose the public to far greater doses of radiation than nuclear power plants do. Therefore, as “fracking” has become a focus of attention, I’ve been even more amused (again, if this is the right word) by reports about “fracking” and radioactive emissions. It seems that fracking, a…
  • Deconstructing “ethical oil”

    kcobb
    4 Jan 2012 | 3:35 pm
When I stumbled across the site EthicalOil.org recently, I thought there was a small chance that it was a parody. And, it turns out that the site reads like a parody in some places even though I am certain that the owners are dead serious. You see, the site is a defense of the Canadian oil sands industry. The argument it makes is that because human rights standards are much better in Canada than in many other oil exporting nations, Canada should be considered a more “moral” source of oil. In fact, the oil from the oil sands is touted as a “fair trade choice.” Once…

News items you might have missed in 2011 Nuclear bloggers work differently than the mainstream media and are not shadows of the nuclear trade press.  We don’t have time to report everything so we try to focus on developments that look like they’ll have more than average influence on the industry.  At this blog I try to answer the “so what” question about the news. • Nuclear Power after Fukushima:

    gmarcus
    29 Dec 2011 | 4:02 pm
New Directions? At the end of each year, I like to take stock of the past year and to try to guess what it may mean for the year ahead. This year is a complex year for doing that. While there have been many good signs this year–the start of construction of the first UAE reactor, a variety of licensing actions in the U.S., and progress in several other countries–the year has, of course, been dominated by the accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power station in Japan. Much of the discussion so far has focused on what the implications of Fukushima are in the near term. I have…
